Density-based estimate using the standard LTL class table.
This is a density-based estimate. The official NMFC freight class for some commodities also depends on stowability, handling and liability, so your carrier's classification can differ. Use it to plan — confirm the real class and price on your quote.
Turn these numbers into a real LTL or truckload rate for your lane. Enter the shipment once and compare carrier pricing in minutes.

Less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers price freight partly by its density — how much a shipment weighs for the space it takes up. Denser freight is cheaper to classify; light, bulky freight costs more because it fills the trailer without filling the weight.
For many commodities the National Motor Freight Classification sets the class by density alone, but some are classed by stowability, ease of handling, or liability (value and fragility) instead. If your item has a fixed NMFC number, the carrier will use it. This calculator gives you the density-based starting point so there are no surprises when you request a quote.
